Inner West Council Library - Marrickville Library

During the summer holidays, Marrickville Library has many events to encourage children to connect with books. For the Summer Reading Club the Inner West Council library staff are dusting off their spandex, putting on masks and capes and diving head first into the best hero and villain books.

From Superman, Luke Skywalker to The Daleks and Voldemort there is a hero or villain hiding in every book at the library.

Take the Summer Reading or ‘Make-it-to-Win-it’Challenge to win some very cool prizes! Plus, visit the interactive superhero and villain wall at Marrickville Library, where you can dress up in cool props and strike a pose for your superhero or supervillain pic.

All entrants must be a member of any Inner West Council library to enter.

Library Lovers' Day 2015

The Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) has declared Saturday February 14 to be Library Lovers' Day (oh, and it's Valentine's Day too!). 

At St Brigid's we're going to be talking about all the books we love, the libraries we love and reading books about love and friendship.

Book Week 2014 - Paper Bag Book Reviews

Students chose their favourite book and created a Paper Bag Book Review. Some examples of these bags were photographed and made into a collage using the Google App Loupe Collage.

That's right! The Premier's Reading Challenge finishes on Friday 22nd August at 11:59 pm.Students can locate PRC books in our library by checking for the label on the spine of PRC books. The labels look like this:

Book Week - Read Across the Universe

And the winners are......

Each year the Children's Book Council of Australia, chooses the best books that have been published during that year. There are 4 categories of books for preschool/primary school aged students. Several books are chosen to be on the shortlist in each category. One of these is chosen as Book of the Year, in that category and there are 2 honour books. Leading up to Book Week, each class has chosen a book from the Short List to focus upon. They have produced an enlarged version of the book cover and have created an item to make others want to read the book. They will present this at our Book Week assembly.

Today in the library I read The Terrible Suitcase to several classes. This book was the winner in the Early Childhood category.

National Literacy and Numeracy Week

This week is National Literacy and Numeracy Week. In the library we will be sharing a special book, Herman and Rosie, which was written and illustrated by Gus Gordon.

Gus Gordon is an illustrator and author. He grew up on a farm in northern NSW and, after leaving school, worked on cattle stations all over Australia before deciding to pursue a career in drawing.

Gus illustrated his first children's book in 1996 and has now illustrated and written over 70 books for children.

Gus's illustrations are known for their loose and energetic line work, mixed media and humour. His writing is always anthropomorphic—where animals take the place of humans in the narrative. He attributes this to his love of Wind in The Willows by Kenneth Grahame.

Gus's first picture book, Wendy, is about a motorcycle-riding stunt chicken and was selected as a Children's Book Council of Australia Notable Book in the 2010 Book of the Year Awards.

Gus lives with his wife and three children on the Northern beaches of Sydney.

Learning to Search the Internet for Information

In library lessons we are learning about searching the internet for information. 

Last week we learned about website evaluation. It is important to make sure a website has been created by someone you can trust and who knows about the topic. Also, the information must be up to date and easy for you to understand.

We viewed a hoax website about octopuses that live in trees. It was designed to teach us about website evaluation.

Welcome to Term 2!

Time has been flying by so quickly this year! 

We are already into our second term. 

It's always a busy time in our library. We are still working on a library makeover and have been locating all the old books and adding many new books and resources.

We will have a sale of our old books and videos later this term.

Library and Information Week 2013 

During the week of May 20-26, St Brigid's Library will join organisations from Broome to Hobart, celebrating Library and Information Week 2013.

Library and Information Week aims to raise the profile of libraries and information service professionals in Australia and showcase the many and varied resources and services that libraries provide to the community.

The event has been organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) to promote the value of reading and literacy, the importance of Australia's book industry and the role of libraries.

During our library lessons in that week, we will be taking a virtual tour of libraries around the world.

National Simultaneous Storytime

One of the events for Library and Information Week will happen at 11am on Wednesday 22nd May. It will take place at St Brigid's and all over Australia. 

It is called National Simultaneous Storytime. This is an important annual campaign that aims to encourage young Australians to read and enjoy books.

This will be the event's 13th year. Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously (at exactly the same time) in libraries, schools, pre-schools, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops and many other places all around our country.

National Simultaneous Storytime aims to;

• promote the value of reading and literacy;

• promote the value and fun of books;

• promote an Australian writer and publisher;

• promote storytime activities in public libraries and communities around the country;

• provide opportunities to involve parents, grandparents, the media and the wider community to participate in and enjoy the occasion.

This event is organised by ALIA (Australian Library and Information Association), which is where teacher librarians have their professional membership.

The Secret Garden Launch - Recount by Chrysi 4B

THE SECRET GARDEN

On 26^th February I went to the opening of the Secret Garden. The Secret Garden is where you can read peacefully. You can feel the fresh air and it is also a very quiet place to do homework and relax.

This is a picture of a girl that goes to St. Brigid’s Catholic Primary School. She was at the opening day of the Secret Garden and dressed up as a punk at story time. The story was called ‘Billy the Punk’.

It was about a boy that saw people dressed up as punks and he thought it was really cool. So Billy went to school dressed up as a punk without his mum knowing, and one day the teacher told Billy not to wear those clothes but he didn't listen so unfortunately she had to call his mother and then Billy started liking something else.

At the opening of the Secret Garden we all had lots of fun.  We also celebrated by having hot dogs, poppers and chips and we also got temporary tattoos after story time. I hope that the Secret Garden is very popular. I hope you enjoy the Secret Garden as much as I do.

Author Visit to St Brigid's

To help us celebrate Catholic Schools Week in 2013, Robert Vescio will be visiting St Brigid's to share his new picture book, Marlo Can Fly, with students from Kindergarten to Year 3.

Premier's Reading Challenge - 2013

Message from the Premier of NSW

Congratulations to the 230,000 students around the state who successfully completed the Reading Challenge last year. The number has grown steadily for the past eleven years, so I expect that there will be even more young people eager to take on the Challenge in 2013.

Reading transports us into other worlds and lives. It allows us to experience a whole range of exciting stories and explore issues which can challenge the way we think and feel.

Students who accept the Challenge this year will have even more books from which to choose. With over 7000 books now on the booklist, the Challenge offers students an opportunity to read widely. I encourage all participants to be adventurous in their reading and add as many different types of books as they can to their reading records.

The world of books is an exciting one. I welcome you to the 2013 Premier's ReadingChallenge and I wish you all happy reading.

The PRC at St Brigid's

The Premier's Reading Challenge is on again. It goes from March 1st until August 31st, so there is plenty of time for you to read books and enter them on the Challenge!

Check the table below to find out how many books you need to read. The teachers from Kindergarten to Year 2 will read books to their class and then enter the books online. Students from Year 3 to Year 6 will read the books and enter them online themselves. You will need to use your PRC log on details. Write them in your diary so you don't forget!
